What is WTA?


WTA stands for the Women’s Tennis Association – there are many different WTA players who you are very likely to be very familiar with. This association was founded in June 1973 by Billie Jean King. It is the organisation of women’s professional tennis and it also governs the WTA Tour which is held worldwide. If you’re wondering how they manage to get so much work done worldwide, the WTA’s corporate headquarters is in St. Petersburg, Florida. Whereas, its European headquarters are in London. If you’re based in Asia-Pacific, the headquarters here are based in Beijing.

Serena Williams

WTA Ranking: 1
Serena Williams was born in September 26, 1981, she is always one of the top WTA players and has an impressive record as a tennis player, so much so that many people know her even if they’re uninterested in the sport. She is an American player and is ranked number 1 in women’s singles tennis. He WTA ranking is impressive, but it is no secret that she is a force to be reckoned. You may already know that when it comes to her WTA ranking, she has been world number one no less than six times in singles!
She has a huge list of achievements which are extremely broad. Some examples being that she won the title as number one in the world for the first time in July 2002. She has been ranked world number 1 for an amazing 306 weeks overall.
Many of her fans believe in her talent and even that she is one of the best tennis players to have ever played. This may be because of the fact that she holds the most major singles, as well as doubles and even mixed doubles titles combined. This is also amongst active players, male and female. Because of her amazing personal record which includes 38 major titles, she is fourth on the all-time list. On top of this, she is second in the open era too. This is down to the fact that she won 22 in singles, 14 in women’s doubles as well as two in mixed doubles.
It may not come as a surprise that in 2016, Williams was the highest paid female athlete. Her earnings amounted to a huge $28.9 million from both endorsements and also prize money. Outside of sports, he achievements include being named the Sportsperson of the Year in December of the year before by Sports Illustrated magazine. This was a huge achievement. You are very likely to have also heard of Venus Williams and the sisters held all four Grand Slam women’s doubles titles. Her list of winnings continues and is one of the most impressive for any tennis player. Some further examples from this continuous list include the fact that she also won 14 Grand Slam doubles and her and her sister are unbeaten in finals. When it comes to talking about the WTA Tour Championships, Williams has impressed everyone by being a five-time winner too. The Williams sisters are a force to be reckoned with.

Angelique Kerber

WTA Ranking: 2
Angelique Kerber was born on 18 January 1988. She is a German player who rose to the limelight in 2011 when she reached the semifinals of the US Open. As one of the best current WTA players, it is little surprise that at that point, she was ranked no. 92 in the entire world. It didn’t take her long to reach even higher and in February 2016, she ranked no. 2 in the world. She remains at this spot now too. Interestingly enough, she is the highest-ranked European, and she is also left-handed too.
She has won a huge array of titles and games and if you are interested in tennis, you are likely to have seen her play. Her first Grand Slam title was at the 2016 Australian Open. As well as this, she has won one title on every surface at the WTA Tour too. Her matches are definitely worth watching!

Garbiñe Muguruza

WTA Ranking: 3
Garbiñe Muguruza Blanco was born on 8 October 1993. She is a Spanish-Venezuelan but she represents Spain in tennis competitions. Her professional career began in 2012. This is when she won three singles titles. Most notably was the 2016 French Open as it was here that she managed to beat current No. 1, Serena Williams in the final. Because of this, she was able to become one of the top WTA players. She achieved an impressive ranking of No. 2 which was to be her career-high after the French Open.
In 2015, she qualified for her first WTA Finals. However, although she made it to the semifinals, it was here that Agnieszka Radwańska knocked her out of the competition. As well as singles, she has had much success in doubles too with Carla Suárez Navarro. Together they won five titles and finished as a runner-up at the 2015 WTA Finals.

Simona Halep

WTA Ranking: 4
Simona Halep is a Romanian player. She managed to break into the world’s top 50 at the end of 2012. After this, it wasn’t long before she made her way into the top 20 too – this feat was achieved in August 2013. A few months later, in January 2014, she finally reached the top ten.
Her games are extremely impressive to watch and she won her first 6 WTA titles in the 2016 too. One of biggest achievements this year was when WTA named her the Most Improved Player. As well as this, ESPN Center Court also named her the Most Improved Player in 2013. Her games and her dedication to the sport is an inspiration to watch.

Agnieszka Radwanska

WTA Ranking: 5
Agnieszka Radwańska was born on 6th March 1989 in Poland. Radwańska ranked as No. 2 in 2012. However, she is now ranked at No. 5. She plays the game in a slightly different way to her compatriots which has won her the nickname of “The Professor” among fellow players. This is said to be down to the way that she makes intelligent use of the court. This has won her many medals and titles.
As well as this, she is the first Polish player to reach the Grand Slam singles final. She was also the first Polish player to win the WTA Finals, this win was in 2015. On top of this, she also claims a WTA singles title and, in keeping with her record breaking, she is the first pole to have done so too. Due to an impressive performance, in 2006, she also won the WTA Award for Most Impressive Newcomer. She is loved by all of her fans and was also voted the WTA’s Fan Favorite Singles Player. This title impressively also continued between 2011-2015.
As well as all of her fantastic achievements in the sporting world, and being the first Pole to break many records, she was awarded by Polish President Bronisław Komorowski with the Gold Cross of Merit.

Venus Williams

WTA Ranking: 6
Venus Ebony Starr Williams was born June 17, 1980. She is an American and she has previously held the former No. 1 spot, now taken by her sister. At this point she holds the No. 6 ranking in singles as of July 25, 2016. It was in February 25 2002 that she became the World No. 1 for the first time. This was a particularly fantastic achievement as she was also the first black American woman to achieve this feat. The achievement was received during the Open Era. She is regarded as someone who is an all-time great and her fans love her.
On top of all of this, Venus is one of only four females to have won five or more Wimbledon singles titles. It was between the 2000 Wimbledon Championships to the 2001 US Open, when she had managed to win four of the six Grand Slam singles tournaments – an impressive feat!

Novak Djokovic

ATP Ranking: No.1

Novak Djokovic, who was born 22 May 1987, is a Serbian player. He is now currently, the No.1 in the entire world and you are very likely to have heard his name, even if you’re not a tennis fan. He is also considered to be one of the greatest players of all time. In order to achieve this title, he has won 12 Grand Slam singles titles. Impressively, he has also held the No. 1 spot in the ATP rankings for an amazing 212 weeks. His list of achievements is absolutely huge including, just this year, becoming the eighth player in history to achieve the Career Grand Slam.

Djokovic has a huge list of impressive records which he has broken, alike many other ATP players. These include breaking the single-season record with six titles in 2015. As well as this, he won 31 consecutive ATP World Tour Masters 1000 series matches, which is huge for any ATP players. He has won many titles which have also included the ATP World Tour Finals.

When it comes to the Olympic, Djokovic also holds many medals. For example, during the 2008 Summer Olympics, he managed to secure a bronze medal in the men’s singles. Needless to say, Djokovic is a hugely impressive athlete who is a pleasure to watch play, especially in person.

He is the first Serbian to ever be ranked No.1, which is yet another feat achieved by this athlete. None of the previous top ATP players have been Serbian. As well as this, he represented his country extremely well in the Grand Slam singles title as he was also the first male Serbian to win here.

When it comes to his acknowledgments outside of tennis, he has won a huge range of awards from the Laureus World Sports Award to the BBC Overseas Sports Personality of the Year award. From these impressive awards and achievements, it is clear to see that this player is one who is well-known and loved, as well as being one of the all-time best ATP players.

Andy Murray

ATP Ranking: 2
Andrew Barron Murray, OBE was born on 15 May 1987. He is a Scottish player and represents Great Britain when playing tennis. He has many achievements and is especially well known and praised in his country. He has won the Grand Slam tournament three times and is also an Olympic champion.
It was in February 2006 that he was first ranked as British No. 1, with this he also achieved a top-10 ranking by the ATP. He was the first British man to win a Grand Slam singles tournament – this was achieved at the US Open. He defeated current No. 1 player Novak Djokovic in the final. His achievements have continued throughout his career and he even won the 2013 Wimbledon Championships. This year, he even won his second Wimbledon title too.
Outside of tennis, Murray also has many achievements and has won many awards. For example, he was voted the 2013 BBC Sports Personality of the Year. As well as this, in 2015, for the second time, he was voted BBC Sports Personality of the Year. His numerous achievements and world titles have made him one of the most loved ATP players of all time, especially in Great Britain.

Roger Federer

ATP Ranking: 3
Roger Federer was born on 8 August 1981. He is a Swiss player and as one of the top ATP players, it’s no surprise that his accomplishments in tennis are huge. For example, he has become one of the greatest tennis players of all time in many people’s eyes. He became a professional in 1998. Since 2002, his passion and game play has meant that he’s always ranked somewhere in the top ten. He holds many different titles and firsts in the game too. For example, he held the No. 1 position for 302 weeks. As well as this, he has won 17 Grand Slam singles titles. He has reached each Grand Slam finals over five times. When it comes to Wimbledon, he has reached the finals ten times.
The list of his achievements continue, he has reached 27 men’s singles Grand Slam finals. This has also included everything from 10 in a row from the 2005 Wimbledon championships. This is to the 2007 US Open too. He is one of the ATP players who has set impressive records throughout his career too.
At this year’s Wimbledon Championships, he amazingly reached a record 48th Grand Slam quarterfinal. It was this year in which he played a 65th consecutive Grand Slam tournament at the Australian open.
When it comes to ATP player’s tournament records, Federer’s is one of the most impressive with a record six ATP World Tour Finals, he played in finals at all nine ATP Masters 1000 tournaments. As well as this, he won the Olympic gold medal in doubles. This was along with Stan Wawrinka, currently fourth in the ATP ranking, at the 2008 Summer Olympic Games. He has achieved a lot of Olympic success.
Outside of tennis, he was also named the Laureus World Sportsman of the Year. This was also for a very impressive record of four consecutive years.


Stanislas Wawrinka

ATP Ranking: 4
Stanislas Wawrinka is a Swiss tennis player. He currently ranks in at fourth as one of the top ATP players. His tennis scores are also extremely impressive and he reached two Grand Slam singles finals in his career. He won both the 2014 Australian Open and the 2015 French Open.
As well as this, he has also managed to reach an impressive world ranking of no. 3 in his career which he managed to hold for months. His achievements are huge and broad, ranging from the French Open to the US Open. He believes that he is best when playing on a clay surface and he is also said to have one of the most powerful backhands around. Interesting facts about this player include that he shortened his name from Stanislas to Stan which he also uses in press conferences too.

Rafael Nadal

ATP Ranking: 5
Rafael Nadal Parera was born on the 3rd June 1986. He is a Spanish player and is now ranked at number five for the ATP rankings. Many people believe that he is one of the absolute greatest players in history and he has also been titled “The King of Clay”. He has a huge following and to watch his games played is a pleasure.
Some of his achievements include: winning 14 Grand Slam singles titles. He also won the 2008 Olympic gold medal in singles. As well as this, he has won 28 titles in ATP World Tour Masters 1000 events. He won the Career Grand Slam at the age of just 24 years old and was impressively the seventh player in history in the Open Era. Outside of tennis, he has also been named as the Laureus World Sportsman of the Year.
Interesting facts are that he is a left-hander, and an extremely successful one at that. Nadal holds an impressive record which is that he has won the most consecutive titles – all in just one particular tournament. This information is based on the fact that he won his eighth straight Monte-Carlo Masters in 2012. His achievements list is huge and he is by far one of the best ATP players around.

Milos Raonic

ATP Ranking: 6
Milos Raonic is a Canadian player. The peak of his career so far was reaching a high at world no. 4 singles ranking. This was last year and he now has a huge run of impressive career highlights too. These include a Grand Slam final at the 2016 Wimbledon Championships. As well as this, he received two Grand Slam semi-finals – this was during the Wimbledon Championships in 2014.
Along with these achievements, he won at the 2016 Australian Open. As well as, winning three ATP World Tour Masters 1000 finals. Throughout his career, he has been one of the best ATP players to watch and first gained attention when he reached the fourth round of the Austrialian Open. This was as a qualifier where people believed he was a rising star.
Outside of tennis, he was awarded the ATP Newcomer of the Year, which is a fantastic achievement so early on in his career. He is also the most successful Canadian singles player in history too.
